Bulldozers plowed through the foundation for Bahrain’s Al-Alawiyat Mosque on Tuesday, which was laid down by local Shia worshipers in the hope of erecting the previously destroyed structure.
Al-Alawiyat was among dozens of Shia religious gathering places that were razed to the ground during the onset of Bahrain’s uprising in 2011.
The widespread destruction was part of Manama’s crackdown against dissent within the country’s Shiite community.
Shiite worshipers had routinely returned to the site of the Al-Alawiyat Mosque to hold evening prayers and were working to reconstruct the building.
