Bahrain’s prisoners of conscience call on UN human rights chief to “intervene”

Prisoners of conscience at Bahrain’s Dry Dock Detention Center are calling on the UN human rights chief to intervene and help end Manama’s mistreatment of political detainees.

The source managed to obtain a copy of a letter sent to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Zeid Ra’ad al-Hussein, which describes the long list of abuses that prisoners are forced to endure.

The letter alleges that prison authorities are denying inmates access to proper food and water while introducing new restrictions and methods of abuse, which include placing prisoners into solitary cells “contaminated with toxic smoke”.

“Is it time for the United Nations to intervene and do justice to these people,” the letter reads.

The prisoners of conscience also accuse Manama of “creating pseudo-organizations and institutions that it utilizes during conferences at the Human Rights Council to polish its image.”
