Since Saturday’s execution of prominent cleric Sheikh Nimr and three other Shia Muslims, hundreds or thousands of people have marched nightly in protest. Shia people in Qatif see the executions as unjustified and continue to denounce the execution. The protests in the city of about one million people have been mostly peaceful. However, a fatal shooting and gun attacks on armored security vehicles have also taken place so far. The Shia-dominated Eastern Province has been the scene of peaceful demonstrations since February 2011. Protesters have been demanding reforms, freedom of expression and the release of innocent political prisoners. They want an end to economic and religious discrimination against the region.
