Pew Research Center Forecasts Islam to Become the World’s Largest Religion by 2100

A recent study by the Pew Research Center predicts significant shifts in the global religious landscape by the end of the 21st century. According to the projections, if current demographic trends continue, Islam is expected to become the world’s largest religion by 2100, with an estimated 3.91 billion adherents.

The report indicates close competition among the world’s major religions. Hinduism is projected to rank second with approximately 3.78 billion followers, while Christianity is expected to hold third place at around 3.1 billion adherents. Researchers attribute the rapid growth of the Muslim population to key demographic factors, including higher fertility rates in Muslim-majority countries, a larger proportion of young people, and accelerated regional population changes.

Other religious groups are projected to grow at a slower pace. The number of people identifying as unaffiliated or atheist is expected to reach about 1.09 billion by 2100. Traditional and indigenous religions are forecasted to total approximately 224.2 million adherents, while the global Jewish population is projected at around 19.6 million.
