An Islamic charity initiative in Birmingham, Alabama, has mobilized hundreds of volunteers to prepare approximately 42,000 meals for families facing food insecurity. The project, organized by the Birmingham Islamic Society in partnership with the Islamic Relief USA, comes amid rising demand for assistance and a reduction in public food support for vulnerable households.

According to CBS News, organizers said the strong volunteer turnout reflects both the community’s sense of responsibility and the growing need for aid. The prepared meals will be distributed across the city, with the schedule for delivery to families to be announced soon.

Mohamed Al-Qanawati, assistant director of community fundraising at Islamic Relief USA, emphasized the importance of sharing available resources with the community, noting that some individuals rely solely on food vouchers and that such initiatives provide critical support.

Volunteers of all ages and backgrounds participated, with the event taking on an emotional significance in memory of 19-year-old volunteer Gina Qashoua, who recently died in a car accident. Her father, Maher Qashoua, recalled her dedication to volunteering and community service. Participants described their work as both a tribute to her legacy and an effort to positively represent the values of Islam through service and charitable engagement.
