Mumbai: MHADA demolishes 13 mosque-owned shops amid allegations of political pressure

On August 14, 2025, the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) demolished 13 shops owned by Noor Elahi Mosque on Mankhurd Link Road, Muslim Mirror reported. These shops, standing for over two decades, provided financial support to the mosque and an attached madrasa. The mosque committee and local residents condemned the demolition, accusing BJP leaders of targeting Muslim properties.
MHADA claimed the shops were built illegally on land used without permission and had issued a notice on June 27 warning of demolition. Mosque treasurer Fayyaz Ahmed expressed shock over the scale of the action, saying efforts to protect the property were ignored.
The mosque trustees alleged that MP Sanjay Dina Patil’s attempt to intervene failed due to “pressure from above,” questioning who was behind it. They accused BJP leaders Nitish Rane and Kirit Somaiya of orchestrating the demolition to seize the land. The mosque vowed to continue fighting to protect their religious sites and property.
