Yale Study Warns of Public Health Risks from Online Weight-Loss Drug Prescriptions

A new study by researchers at Yale University has raised public health concerns over the easy online availability of GLP-1 weight-loss drugs without essential medical supervision.

The study found that 92 percent of the websites reviewed prescribed the drugs after users completed only an online form, without a direct consultation with a doctor or a proper review of medical history and possible drug interactions.

According to Bloomberg, 69 percent of the platforms even shipped the medication to buyers.

Researchers also warned that many of the websites were selling unauthorized compounded versions of the drugs that have not been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration.

Scientists said GLP-1 medications can cause serious side effects and should only be used after a careful review of a patient’s medical record and under proper medical supervision.
