Slower Writing Speed May Be Early Sign of Dementia in Older Adults

New research suggests that a decline in writing speed among older adults may be an early sign of cognitive decline and dementia.

According to Independent Persian, researchers in Portugal studied people over the age of 80 to examine links between handwriting performance and cognitive health.

The findings showed that individuals with mild cognitive impairment wrote significantly more slowly when transcribing dictated sentences.
Researchers said the results highlight the importance of early detection, as changes in writing speed may help identify cognitive problems before more severe symptoms appear.
