Research Shows Laughter Reduces Stress and Anxiety
————————————
A new study suggests that laughter is a powerful tool for improving mental and physical health, helping to make the stress of life feel less overwhelming, Earth.com revealed. The research, led by Yelsyn-Mauricio Porras-Jiménez of the University of Jaén, analyzed 33 studies on laughter therapy from various countries.
The analysis found that participants who engaged in laughter therapy sessions, which included methods like laughter yoga and comedic films, showed significant improvements. On average, they scored 8 to 10 points lower on an anxiety scale and 10 to 12 points higher on a life satisfaction scale compared to control groups.
The article explains that laughter has both physiological and psychological benefits. It can lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol while releasing endorphins, which are natural mood-boosting chemicals. Psychologically, laughter is a key component of positive psychology, helping individuals to reframe stressful situations and build resilience.
The study concludes that laughter’s effectiveness lies in its ability to simultaneously impact biological, psychological, and social well-being, providing a low-cost and enjoyable method for improving overall health.
