Frequent nightmares may accelerate biological ageing and increase the risk of early death, according to a new study presented at the European Academy of Neurology Congress. Researchers found that adults who experience nightmares weekly are over three times more likely to die before the age of 70 compared to those who rarely or never have them.

The study, led by Dr. Abidemi Otaiku of the UK Dementia Research Institute and Imperial College London, analysed data from over 185,000 participants aged 8 to 86 over a 19-year period. Nightmares were found to disrupt sleep quality and trigger stress responses, including elevated cortisol levels, which contribute to faster cellular ageing.

Nightmares were a stronger predictor of premature death than smoking or obesity. The study showed consistent findings across age, sex, ethnicity, and mental health status. Researchers emphasized the importance of managing stress and sleep hygiene, noting that nightmares are both common and treatable, and should be considered a public health concern.
