UN Warns of Global Education Crisis Amid Teacher Shortages

United Nations Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed has warned of a deepening global teacher shortage that threatens the future of sustainable development goals. Her remarks came at the UNESCO Global Teachers’ Meeting in Santiago, Reuters reported.

Mohammed stressed that teachers are “the beating heart of education and the pillars of sustainable development.” She noted that the world will require more than 44 million new teachers by 2030 to meet global needs.

Highlighting the urgency of the situation, she called for immediate international action, urging improvements in working conditions, greater respect for teachers, and renewed investment in education. She also outlined a five-step plan aimed at strengthening the teaching profession and safeguarding the future of education.
