Diyala Places 14 Religious Shrines on Security, Service Alert for Muharram

The Religious Shrines Authority in Iraq’s Diyala province has announced a heightened security and service alert at 14 shrines and religious sites across the province as Muharram commemorations begin.
The measures come as large numbers of pilgrims and mourners gather to mark the martyrdom of Imam Hussein, his family and his companions, peace be upon them.
Ahmed al-Rubaie, the authority’s media director, said the alert covers 14 shrines and religious sites in Baqubah and other parts of Diyala. He said the measures will remain in place for ten consecutive days, covering the main period of Husseini mourning rituals up to the tenth of Muharram.
Al-Rubaie said the shrines are hosting mourning gatherings and Husseini processions, while thousands of visitors and families are expected to take part in the religious commemorations. Special security and service plans have therefore been prepared to ensure smooth movement and provide suitable conditions for mourners.
He added that security forces, in coordination with shrine administrations, have adopted a plan based on multiple security rings to protect visitors and processions and manage the heavy crowds expected during Muharram.
The measures aim to maintain high levels of security and organization while allowing flexible movement for pilgrims. Coordination will continue between the Religious Shrines Authority, security commands and service departments throughout the Ashura commemorations.
Diyala province witnesses wide-scale Muharram activities every year, with religious shrines attracting large numbers of visitors who attend Husseini gatherings and mourning processions in memory of Imam Hussein’s eternal uprising.
