Rare Blue Quran Manuscript Displayed at Quran Museum in Mecca
————————————
The Quran Museum in the Hira Cultural District has unveiled a rare copy of the Blue Quran, featuring verses from Surah Al-Baqarah spanning the end of verse 37 to the beginning of verse 42. The exhibition highlights the richness of Islamic Qur’anic heritage and its long artistic history.
The Blue Quran is regarded as one of the rarest and most luxurious Qur’anic manuscripts in Islamic civilization. It was written in pure gold ink in early Kufic script on parchment dyed a deep blue, a distinctive artistic style that reflects the care early Muslims devoted to the aesthetics of Qur’anic calligraphy and their reverence for the sacred text.
Dating back to the third century AH (ninth century CE), the manuscript holds significant historical and scholarly value as evidence of the development of Arabic calligraphy and ornamentation in the early Islamic period. Only a limited number of its pages survive today, scattered across a small number of museums and private collections worldwide.
The display forms part of the Quran Museum’s broader efforts to introduce visitors to the historical stages of Qur’anic transcription and to showcase exceptional examples of Qur’anic manuscripts. These initiatives aim to enhance cultural awareness and enrich the experience of visitors to the Hira Cultural District from within Saudi Arabia and abroad.
Located in Mecca, the Quran Museum is a major cultural landmark, presenting the history of the Qur’an from the revelation onward through rare manuscripts, historic copies, and interactive exhibits linked to the beginnings of the Islamic message.
