Shia Muslims worldwide mark the joyous birth of the Honourable Abal-Fazl al-Abbas (peace be upon him) on the 4th of Sha’ban, a figure revered for his loyalty, bravery, and selflessness in the events of Karbala. Born in Medina in 26 AH, the Honourable Abbas was raised under the guidance of Imam Ali (peace be upon him) and Lady Umm al-Banin (peace be upon her), shaping a character celebrated for faith, courage, and devotion.
Known as “Qamar Bani Hashim,” al-Abbas played a pivotal role in the Battle of Karbala, standing steadfast alongside Imam Hussain (peace be upon him) and ultimately attaining martyrdom at age 35 on the 10th of Muharram, 61 AH. He was entrusted with the role of standard-bearer of Imam Hussain’s army, reflecting the Imam’s complete trust in his courage and integrity.
His Shrine in Karbala, in proximity to the Shrine of Imam Hussain (peace be upon him), forms a central pilgrimage site known as “Bain al-Haramayn”, drawing millions of devotees annually.
Al-abbas’s numerous titles, including Bab al-Hawaij (Gate of Needs), Saqqa (Water Bearer), Flag-Bearer, and Standard-Bearer, reflect his spiritual and historical significance. Among Shia believers, the invocation:
“Ya Kashifa al-Karb ‘an Wajh al-Hussain, Ikshif Karbi bihaqq Akhik al-Hussain”
is widely recited, often 133 times, as a plea for relief and assistance through his intercession.
Stories of his miracles and intercessions, including the resolution of hardships and healing of the sick, are widely circulated among devotees.
The Shrine of Amir al-Mo’mineen (peace be upon him) in holy Najaf was adorned with flowers and banners to mark his birth anniversary, with devotees offering their congratulations to the Commander of the Faithful on this auspicious occasion.
