Birth Anniversary of Imam Ali (peace be upon him) Marked by Global Shia Observances, Reflections on His Universal Legacy

Shia communities across several countries commemorated the birth anniversary of Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib (peace be upon him) — born inside the Ka‘ba on the 13th of Rajab — with religious gatherings, public decorations, and educational programs highlighting his moral, ethical, and human legacy.
Imam Ali (peace be upon him), the first Imam and the rightful successor of the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), is widely regarded as a unique historical figure whose life embodied justice, moral integrity, courage, and devotion. Religious scholars emphasize that his personality and teachings transcend sectarian and temporal boundaries and continue to inspire Muslims and non-Muslims alike. Numerous thinkers throughout history have cited his conduct, governance, and ethical standards as models of human excellence.
According to religious sources, Imam Ali (peace be upon him) was born inside the Holy Ka‘ba, an event regarded by Muslims as a sign of his exceptional spiritual status. His life, marked by asceticism, knowledge, bravery, and unwavering commitment to justice, is considered unparalleled in Islamic history. Shia scholars also stress that no historical figure—among companions or later leaders—has matched his combined moral, spiritual, and social standing.
The commemoration also highlighted the continuation of Imam Ali’s path through his sons and descendants. Imam Hasan and Imam Husayn (peace be upon them), followed by the remaining Imams from the Prophet’s Household (peace be upon them all), are regarded as inheritors of his values. Their lives, sacrifices, and teachings are viewed as practical demonstrations of defending truth, justice, and human dignity through action as well as speech.
In Iraq, celebrations were visibly held in Karbala, where the area between the holy shrines of Imam Husayn (peace be upon him) and Abal-Fazl al-Abbas (peace be upon him) was decorated with banners and symbols of joy marking the birth anniversary of Imam Ali (peace be upon him). Special inscriptions commemorating the occasion were installed, contributing to a festive spiritual atmosphere for pilgrims and visitors.
Shia communities have held vibrant celebrations and sacred gatherings to honor this occasion. In cities such as Lucknow, India, mosques and community centres hosted late-night majalis, recitations and sermons celebrating Imam Ali’s virtues. In Hyderabad, Pakistan, processions bearing traditional sehra reached the Koh-e-Moula Ali shrine, drawing devotees in observances of praise and reverence.
