Iraq: Holy Shrines Host Commemorations for Prophet Muhammad’s Martyrdom Anniversary
………………
Shia holy shrines and religious sites across Iraq have been hosting mourning rituals to mark the anniversary of Prophet Muhammad’s (peace be upon him and his family) martyrdom, drawing large numbers of visitors from within the country and abroad.
According to the Secretariat-General of Shia Shrines, thousands of pilgrims have been arriving for several days to participate in religious and cultural programs dedicated to the occasion. The shrines of the Prophet’s family and descendants have welcomed the visitors, while staff and volunteers mobilized to provide essential services.
In particular, the Grand Mosque of Kufa and its affiliated shrines have seen significant turnout, with pilgrims gathering to take part in mourning ceremonies, lectures, and recitations highlighting the Prophet’s life, sacrifices, and role in spreading the Islamic message.
Organizers noted that events were held continuously throughout the day, combining rituals with educational activities. The commemoration follows the annual Arbaeen pilgrimage in Karbala, after which many participants continued their journeys to other shrines across Iraq.
The Secretariat emphasized that this year’s observances focused on honoring the Prophet’s legacy and the challenges he faced during his mission. Officials described the ceremonies as an important expression of devotion and unity among visitors marking the solemn anniversary.
