Holy Karbala hosted the first research session of the 9th International Arbaeen Scientific Conference on August 19, 2025, highlighting a study on converting pilgrims’ footsteps into clean energy, media outlets reported.

Titled “Using Piezoelectric Energy Harvesting from Human Footsteps: Arbaeen in Karbala as a Case Study,” the session was chaired by Professor Hiba Khudair and featured a research team including Professors Qusay Al-Kubaisi, Israa Al-Mashhadani, Najah Abdul Hassan, Lara Muwafaq, and Ahmed Aliwi.

The study explored how the millions of visitors during the Arbaeen pilgrimage could generate sustainable energy using piezoelectric technology. Researchers emphasized that the event could serve as a large-scale natural laboratory, merging science, technology, and spirituality while promoting sustainable development.

Organizers noted that the research exemplifies a growing trend of integrating advanced academic and technological approaches with cultural and spiritual practices, offering new opportunities for applied research that benefits both local communities and global sustainability initiatives.
