Argentina’s Muslim Community Strengthens Its Presence Despite Limited Number of Mosques

Argentina’s Muslim community, widely regarded as one of the largest in Latin America, continues to strengthen its religious, cultural and social presence despite challenges linked to the limited number of mosques and Islamic institutions across the country.

Buenos Aires remains the main center of Muslim life in Argentina and Latin America, hosting several of the country’s most prominent mosques and Islamic centers. These institutions play an important role in preserving Muslim religious and cultural identity and supporting communication among members of the community.

The Muslim presence in Argentina dates back more than a century. Its early roots are linked to Moriscos who left Andalusia, while its modern development was shaped largely by waves of Arab migration from the Levant in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. These communities contributed to the formation of a visible Arab and Islamic presence in Argentine society.

Among the country’s notable Islamic landmarks is Al Ahmad Mosque in Buenos Aires, one of Argentina’s oldest and most active Sunni mosques. The mosque continues to provide religious and educational services and contributes to introducing Islam through programs broadcast on local media.

Despite its long history, the Muslim community faces several challenges, including the limited number of mosques and Islamic centers compared with the size of the country, as well as fewer halal products and services in some areas.

Islamic institutions in Argentina say they continue to provide religious, cultural and social services, welcome Muslim visitors and travelers, and promote dialogue and coexistence in a society known for its cultural and religious diversity.
