At least 37 people were killed and dozens injured after a passenger bus fell into a ravine in Peru’s southern Arequipa region, Reuters reported on Wednesday. Regional health chief Walther Oporto said 36 victims died at the scene and another later in hospital, citing information from firefighters at the crash site.
Authorities said the bus, operated by the company Llamosas, was traveling from the coastal town of Chala to Arequipa when it collided with a van and plunged about 200 meters (656 feet) into a ravine. Images released by local authorities showed the vehicle overturned at the bottom, surrounded by debris and personal belongings.
Among the injured were an eight-month-old baby and two other children, officials said. The Arequipa government confirmed that 26 people were receiving medical treatment, three of them in serious condition. The accident is among the deadliest in Peru in recent years.
