ISIS sexually abused Shia, Christian and Yazidi girls as young as 9, UN report reveals
The global newspaper “The National” has published the report of the United Nations investigation team tasked with uncovering the crimes committed by the ISIS terrorist organization against religious and ethnic minorities in areas under its control in Iraq.
The newspaper quoted the team, called “UNITAD,” saying in the section on sexual violence committed by ISIS criminals, that “the leadership of the terrorist organization had encouraged its members to commit serious violations against young girls in its areas of influence,” adding that “the team had succeeded in compiling a list of sexual assaults committed against women and children in Iraq between 2014 and 2017.”
In the same context, the United Nations Special Adviser and head of the UNITAD team in Iraq, Christian Richter, said in a special interview seen by Shia Waves Agency, that “the team reaffirms its firm commitment to seeking justice for the horrific crimes committed by ISIS against various Iraqi segments, while efforts aimed at investigating sexual crimes against women, boys and girls remain at the forefront, with serious work to uncover the extent of ISIS’s brutality in Iraq.”
Richter expressed his gratitude for the support of the Iraqi authorities, which facilitated his team’s investigations,” stressing that “they will remain indebted to the brave victims, especially women and girls, who have come forward to speak and share their painful stories in the hope of bringing the perpetrators of these crimes to justice in the competent courts and achieving justice for all of these victims and survivors”.
The National pointed out that the report had stressed the urgent need for further investigations into the sexual crimes committed by ISIS against Christian children, Shia Turkmen, Kakai and some Sunnis, while the UN team remains committed to its mandate to continue collecting, analysing and evaluating evidence on these horrific crimes.
