UN chief urges heads of states to plan for fossil-fuel-free future

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres called on world leaders gathered at the annual U.N. climate conference Friday to plan for a future without fossil fuels.

“I urge governments to help industry make the right choice — by regulating, legislating, putting a fair price on carbon, ending fossil fuel subsidies, and adopting a windfall tax on profits,” Guterres said.

Guterres continued: “we cannot save a burning planet with a firehouse of fossil fuels,” adding that meeting a global goal of limiting warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius “is only possible if we ultimately stop burning all fossil fuels.”
