Grand Ayatollah Shirazi: Sadat are descendants of Hashem through father, Imam Hasan, Imam Hussain, peace be upon them, are exceptions
The daily scholarly meeting of Grand Ayatollah Seyyed Sadegh al-Hosseini al-Shirazi was held on Thursday, the fifth of Rabi al-Awwal. In this session, like the previous meetings, the Marja answered the questions of the attendees about various jurisprudence issues.
Grand Ayatollah Shirazi discussed the revelation of Surah al-Kawthar, and said: “When the Messenger of God, peace be upon him and his family, lost two of his sons, named Abdullah and Qasim, the enemies of the Prophet sarcastically addressed him with the term Abtar (the one without posterity). They said that the Prophet of God did not have a son, and has only one daughter, whose progeny is not attributed to the Prophet, because in Arab culture the progeny is attributed to a man through the son, and so when that person dies, his generation ends.”
His Eminence continued: “The name of the insulter is mentioned in Quranic commentaries as A’as bin Wa’el. Even though he had several sons, the Qur’an says about him at the end of Surah al-Kawthar: “Inna sha’nee’aka huwal-Abtar” “Surely the one insulting you is the one without progeny (and your progeny will remain in abundance, blessings, and honor until the Day of Resurrection), that is, the person who expresses hatred, grudge, and enmity towards you, will have no progeny remaining. We see that the insulter died and his progeny perished, and his name is not heard of anymore, but the Holy Prophet’s progeny, peace be upon them, remained through Sayyida Fatima al-Zahra, peace be upon her.
The Supreme Religious Authority subsequently discussed the allocation of Khums to people whose mother is from Sadat. He said: “Khums can be given to a person who is a Hashemite through their father, with ancestry tracing to Hashem ibn Abd Manaf. However, Imam Hasan and Imam Hussain, peace be upon them, are an exception in this regard. That’s because in the verse of Mubahila, the Almighty God used the term “our sons”, despite the fact that according to the Arabic language, these nobles are the children of Abu Talib and not the Holy Prophet, peace and blessings of God be upon them. Based on the evidence, we reason that the Divine Lawmaker has made an exception here, and thus Imam Hasan and Imam Hussain are sons of the Apostle of Allah, peace be upon them
