Grand Ayatollah Shirazi: Qur’an’s explicit expression of proclaiming Wilayah of Amir al-Mu’minin on Ghadir was warning to hypocrites
The daily scholarly meeting of Grand Ayatollah Seyyed Sadegh al-Hosseini al-Shirazi was held on Tuesday, the third of Rabi al-Awwal. In this session, like the previous meetings, the Marja answered the questions of the attendees about various jurisprudential issues.
Grand Ayatollah Shirazi discussed verse 67 of Surah al-Ma’ida, “O the Messenger, convey {to the people} what has been revealed to you from your Lord. If you do not do so, you have not fulfilled His Mission. God protects you from the people, Surely God does not guide the disbelieving people,” and made comments in relation to the transmission of the Divine Message, the Wilayah and Succession of Amir al-Mu’minin, peace be upon him.
His Eminence said that, without a doubt, this verse is addressed to the Holy Prophet, peace be upon him and his family, but it is actually aimed at the hypocrites.
The Supreme Religious Authority cited the famous hadith from Imam Sadiq: “The Qur’an was revealed like this Arabic proverb, ‘We are telling you, but listen, O neighbor’,” and said: “There is a similar proverb in the Persian language, which says, talk to the door so that the wall will hear. In fact, in this verse, although the Almighty God is addressing the Holy Prophet, but in reality, God has addressed the hypocrites, emphasizing that without conveying this particular divine order, the whole prophetic mission becomes incomplete and perhaps null and void.”
He further noted that: “Without a doubt, the Prophet of God, peace and blessings of God be upon him and his family, took full care in fulfilling his Divine Mission and communicating all divine verses, and he would definitely communicate this verse to the people. But the emphasis “if you do not do it,” has been intended to warn the hypocrites and those who are supposed to not follow this verse after that.
