3rd of Rabi al-Awwal marks anniversary of Yazid troops’ invasion to Mecca, desecration of holy Ka’ba
The third of Rabi al-Awwal of year 64 AH marks a dark day in history when Yazid’s troops, under the command of Ḥuṣayn ibn Numayr, attacked Mecca and desecrated the Divine Sanctuary of Allah, Ka’ba.
Yazid bin Muawiyah ruled the caliphate for three years. In the first year, he martyred Imam Hussain, peace be upon him, the beloved descendant of the Messenger of God and the Pure son of Imam Ali and Sayyida Zahra, peace be upon them. Yazid, also committed countless crimes, especially against the Ahlul-Bayt of the Holy Prophet.
In the second year, he turned the uprising that had started in Madinah into a massacre and devastated Madinah with unspeakable bloodshed.
Towards the end of his calamitous caliphate, he dispatched one of the commanders of his army by the name Ḥuṣayn ibn Numayr to Makkah in order to suppress Abdullah bin Zubair. During this attack, he besieged the Holy Ka’ba and battered it with catapults.
The desecrating attack on the Ka’ba started on the third day of Rabi al-Awwal in 64 AH and the siege continued until the news of the death of the evil tyrant, Yazid, reached Ḥuṣayn ibn Numayr.
