Tibetan Muslim Community in Kashmir: A Reminder of the Past, a Hope for the Future

In Kashmir, a vibrant Tibetan Muslim community exists, primarily consisting of descendants of refugees who fled Chinese troops in the 1950s.

The presence of Muslims in Tibet dates back to the 10th century, with Muslim travelers arriving via the Silk Road.

However, due to Chinese oppression, the community has diminished, with Muslims now comprising only 2-3 percent of Tibet’s population.

Tibetan communities, such as those in Kashmir, serve as a reminder of a Muslim past and hold the potential to inspire a vision of a Muslim future in the region.
