Climatologists at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) announced this month that the long-anticipated event known as El Niño is officially here and could last until 2024.
El Niño is an unusual ocean current characterized by warmer-than-average sea surface temperatures around the equator in the central and eastern Pacific Ocean.
According to scientists, this phenomenon occurs every two to seven years, killing large numbers of sea creatures and causing noticeable and often severe changes in weather conditions.
It is worth mentioning that the last El Niño event occurred between February and August 2019, but its impacts were relatively weak.
