Chinese diplomat expelled for intimidating Canadian lawmaker critical of mistreating Uyghur Muslims
Canada expelled a Toronto-based Chinese diplomat on Monday, May 8, for gathering information on Michael Chong, an outspoken critic of China’s Uyghur Muslims policy.
Following an intelligence report accusing the Chinese envoy of trying to intimidate the Canadian lawmaker, the Canadian Foreign Ministry declared the diplomat as “persona non grata” or “unwelcome person” and expelled him.
The originally-Chinese Parliament Member has been one of the main factors in official condemnation of Beijing’s policies against Uyghur Muslim.
China denies any mistreatment of this ethnic group, but human rights organizations accuse the country of imprisoning one million Uyghurs and oppressing more than 10 million Muslims in Xinjiang province.
