A new report has revealed that no fewer than 1,151 civilians and 79 security operatives were killed in the first quarter of 2023.
The report, released by Nigeria Mourn, a violent incident tracking organization in Nigeria, said that more than 658 abductions were recorded across the country within the period being examined.
The report confirmed that 22.11%, amounting to at least 272 fatalities were due to terrorist attacks by Boko Haram and other extremist groups operating in West Africa; pointing out that deaths based on political backgrounds such as recent elections, were 7.72%, no fewer than 95 lives.
According to the report, banditry still tops causes of violence-related deaths in Nigeria with 29.27%, which amounts to 360 deaths, confirming the rise in organized crimes and deliberate killings which constitutes about 10.08% and 13.65% respectively with (at least 124 and 168 deaths each).
Nigerian President repeatedly claimed to have not only reduced the activities of Boko Haram insurgents but have defeated the terrorists. While, the report indicated that there has been a dramatic rise in the activities of Boko-Haram/ISWAP in recent times.
