New report reveals that Muslims are targets of religious discrimination in the Netherlands
The UK-based ‘Muslim News’ newspaper has published a report in which it said that discrimination complaints made to the police and the children’s ombudsman in the Netherlands had increased compared to 2021.
The newspaper confirmed in the report, published on its official website today Thursday – April 27th, that the number of complaints submitted to the police were 6,738 in 2022, that is 2% more than in 2021; adding that most of the ethnic-based incidents were experienced in professional settings and public services.
Citing data from the police on religion-related discrimination, the report said Muslims were targeted by 93% in 2022, compared to 67% in 2021.
As per the report, discrimination complaints submitted to police continues to rise for the third year in a row, pointing that 43% of the complaints reported to the police and 49% of the complaints reported to the Discrimination Complaints Services (ADV) were based on ethnicity.
According to statistics, Muslims in the Netherlands make up approximately 5 per cent of the population.
