Algerian parliament to impose further restrictions on press

Algeria’s parliament is moving forward with a proposed law that would further limit press freedom in the country.

The new law would impose stricter media ownership regulations and prevent journalists from protecting their sources.

The bill was approved by parliament’s lower house on March 28 and is now being debated by the upper house, with a vote expected on Thursday.

If passed, the law would prohibit Algerian media outlets from receiving funding or “direct and indirect material aid” from abroad.

It should be mentioned that Algeria ranks 134th on the World Press Freedom Index.
