U.S. Withdraws Final Troops From Afghanistan, Pentagon Says
The Pentagon announced the departure of the last American soldier from Afghanistan on Monday night, bringing an end to a 20-year war in Afghanistan after a Taliban takeover of the country.
“I am here to announce that we have completed our withdrawal from Afghanistan,” said the commander of US Central Command, General Kenneth McKenzie, during a press conference.
“The last C-17 aircraft took off from Kabul airport on August 30 at 9:29 GMT”, General McKenzie, who has Afghanistan under his command, added.
“If the military evacuations are over, the diplomatic mission to verify whether there are more eligible American or Afghan citizens willing to leave continues,” he added.
General McKenzie said that during the past 18 days, the planes of the United States and its allies evacuated more than 123,000 civilians from Hamid Karzai Airport.
The Pentagon acknowledged that the number of people who were able to be evacuated from Kabul before the last US soldier withdrew from Afghanistan on Monday night was less than it had hoped, and McKenzie said, “We have not been able to evacuate everyone we wanted to evacuate.”
