Parliamentary response from Bahrain to Italian MPs’ letter on the deteriorating human rights situation

The Head of the Permanent Human Rights Committee, and member of the Foreign Affairs, Defense and National Security Committee in the Bahraini Parliament, Ammar al-Bannai, claimed that those convicted in Bahrain are subject to fair trials in accordance with international laws and standards.
This came in response to a letter sent by four Italian MPs regarding the deteriorating human rights situation in Bahrain.
The MPs referred in their letter to the widespread torture practices in interrogation centers, and to the death and prison sentences issued against political activists and human rights defenders, calling on the Bahraini authorities to release them all, especially with the outbreak of the Coronavirus inside prisons.
Al-Bannai considered the letter as interference in Bahrain’s internal affairs, rejecting all the facts contained in it, claiming that there were no torture practices and that prison and death sentences were issued in accordance with the laws.
It is noteworthy that several European countries are witnessing a diplomatic movement against human rights violations in Bahrain, while the European Parliament adopted last March a draft resolution condemning human rights violations in Bahrain.
