Mass grave discovered in southern Iraq

A new mass grave has been discovered in the town of Sayyid al-Dhahab in Dhi Qar province containing remains of people executed by the Saddam dictatorial regime.
The Parliamentary Committee of Martyrs, Victims and Political Prisoners stated that it is necessary to inform generations of the crimes committed by the former regime, indicating that the mass graves discovered from time to time “are the witnesses to those crimes.”
The committee added that “these graves are a witness to the crimes of the Baath and God wills that these crimes and graves be discovered despite the passage of a long period since the fall of the Baath Party.”
The committee called the Martyrs Foundation, especially the Department of Mass Graves, to take swift action in accordance with the Law of Mass Graves No. 5 of 2006.
It stressed the need to “pay attention to erecting memorials for those graves to remain a witness to the brutality of the former regime.”
