Kashmir’s Shia Association unveils major organizational plan for Ashura

In a significant move to enhance Ashura commemorations, the All Jammu and Kashmir Shia Association (AJKSA) led by Haji Firdous Mirza held a high-level meeting in Srinagar with representatives from 38 Hussaini processional units across the region. The gathering aimed to improve the discipline and spiritual atmosphere of the upcoming Ashura events, receiving strong support from the local Shia community.

A key outcome of the meeting was the decision to limit each procession’s stop at the Imam Bargah Zadibal to 12 minutes, ensuring smooth movement and allowing all activities to conclude before sunset prayers. The event also introduced a new numbering system for procession units to improve coordination and field accountability.

To better accommodate women participants, ground floors will be designated for women’s mourning gatherings, while maintaining the historical procession format. Organizers emphasized preserving the traditional nature of the observance, including serving simple local meals such as Fakah Shekani, and avoiding Western-style foods.

The Association also encouraged humanitarian organizations to offer on-site support, such as first aid and social services. The plan has been widely welcomed by the Shia community in Kashmir as a respectful and reform-minded initiative that reflects devotion and honors the spirit of Ashura.
