Study links competitive bodybuilding to high risk of sudden cardiac death

A new study published in the European Heart Journal reveals a significantly high risk of sudden cardiac death (SCD) among male bodybuilders, especially professionals. Researchers analyzed records of 20,286 men who competed in International Fitness and Bodybuilding Federation events between 2005 and 2020. Of the 121 recorded deaths, 38% were due to SCD, with professional bodybuilders facing over five times the risk compared to amateurs.

Led by Dr. Marco Vecchiato from the University of Padova, the study attributes the heightened risk to intense training, rapid weight-loss practices, and potential use of performance-enhancing substances. Some autopsies showed enlarged hearts and coronary artery disease.

The study urges greater awareness, regular cardiovascular screenings, and stronger anti-doping measures. It also calls for a cultural shift within the bodybuilding community to prioritize health over extreme physical appearance. Researchers plan further studies on female bodybuilders and long-term health trends in the sport.
