The UN Human Rights Office has raised concerns over the Maldives Parliament’s dismissal of two Supreme Court judges, citing threats to judicial independence. Judges Azmiralda and Mahaz were removed following anti-corruption investigations launched soon after the Supreme Court took up a constitutional challenge against a new amendment restricting lawmakers from switching parties.
The UN questioned the timing of the probe, suggesting it aimed to prevent judicial intervention. The dismissed judges allege violations of due process, including being barred from testifying and legal representation being restricted during closed-door proceedings.
The dismissals followed a law reducing the number of Supreme Court justices from seven to five, with the government citing ongoing investigations based on anonymous complaints. Judge Al Suood resigned in March in protest.
The UN urged the Maldives to uphold international obligations ensuring an independent judiciary, warning that political interference could undermine the rule of law and human rights protections.
