Irish town introduces Islamic burial option in support of cultural diversity

Authorities in Omagh, north of Dublin, have announced the provision of Islamic burial arrangements at Greenhill Cemetery, reflecting a growing commitment to religious inclusion and multicultural values.

Local council officials confirmed that burial practices at the site will now accommodate key Islamic requirements, including burial within 24 hours and positioning the deceased toward Mecca.

John Newe, Director of Environment and Place at the council, stated that staff successfully worked with Muslim families to ensure respectful, faith-based burial options and pledged continued support for community diversity.

Greenhill Cemetery, expanded in 2019, currently offers 1,071 plots and space for further expansion. Family plots, accommodating up to six individuals, have grown in demand and may affect overall capacity in the future. Observers view this move as a meaningful gesture toward cultural sensitivity, signaling that dignity in both life and death is a right for all—regardless of faith or background.
