The United Nations has condemned ongoing military attacks in Myanmar despite a ceasefire declared after a deadly earthquake on March 28 that killed nearly 3,800 people. Although a temporary truce was announced on April 2 to facilitate humanitarian aid, reports indicate that at least 243 military assaults, including 171 airstrikes, have occurred since, resulting in over 200 civilian deaths.
The majority of these attacks reportedly took place after the ceasefire began. The ceasefire, which was largely ignored, officially expired on April 30. The UN emphasized the urgent need for a genuine, nationwide halt to hostilities and a return to civilian governance.
The continued violence is impacting a population already struggling from years of conflict and now further burdened by the earthquake’s aftermath. With nearly 20 million people reliant on aid, the UN stressed that humanitarian assistance must reach those in need without obstruction and called for lasting peace and protection for civilians.
