At least six people were killed on Tuesday in an Israeli attack on Koya in Syria’s southern Deraa province, according to Syria’s foreign ministry. Israel said the strike followed gunfire directed at its troops, though it did not specify whether they were inside Syrian territory.
Syria condemned the attack as a violation of its sovereignty and called for an international investigation. Tensions have been rising between Israel and Syria following the removal of former Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad in December.
Since then, Israel has carried out multiple airstrikes on military sites in Syria and deployed troops into a UN-monitored buffer zone. The EU and Jordan warned that Israel’s actions could increase regional instability, while UN officials expressed concern over Israel’s demand for the demilitarization of southern Syria.
