Trump administration to end temporary legal status for over 500,000 migrants

The Trump administration has announced plans to revoke the temporary legal status of more than 530,000 migrants from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela, ordering them to leave before their protections expire on April 24, the BBC reported.

These migrants entered the U.S. under the Biden-era CHNV sponsorship program, which allowed them to stay for two years with the support of American sponsors. However, Trump suspended the initiative upon taking office, arguing it undermined American jobs and contributed to immigration challenges.

The Department of Homeland Security criticized the program, stating it failed to meet its objectives. While most migrants will lose their status, some may be allowed to remain under case-by-case reviews.

This move follows the administration’s decision to end Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haitians and Venezuelans, though legal challenges are underway. Since taking office in January, Trump’s immigration policies have faced severe criticism from global rights groups and organizations..
