Iraq leads in palm trees, ranks fourth in global date production

Iraq holds the top spot globally for the number of palm trees and ranks fourth in date production, according to the country’s Ministry of Agriculture.

Technical Undersecretary Mithaak Abdul-Hussein stated that as of 2025, Iraq has over 22 million palm trees, with plans to increase this number to 30 million in the coming years.

In terms of global rankings, Iraq is followed by Iran with 21 million palm trees, Saudi Arabia with 12 million, and Algeria with 9 million. Egypt and Libya each have around 7 million trees, according to available data.

Abdul-Hussein also highlighted Iraq’s growing date production, which exceeded 800,000 tons in 2024, with more than 700,000 tons exported worldwide.
