Swedish Minister for Schools, Lotta Edholm, announced on Thursday, March 13, a proposed law to ban mobile phone use among students in Swedish schools. If approved, the ban will take effect on July 1, 2026.
During a press conference, Edholm emphasized that the proposed law aims to reduce students’ screen time, which has been linked to decreased attention, mental distraction, loss of focus, and reduced physical activity.
The ban will apply to screens throughout the school day nationwide and is expected to be fully implemented by mid-2026.
However, exceptions will be made for educational purposes and specific cases, such as medical conditions. The proposed restriction will cover preschools, compulsory schools, and recreational lecture areas.
