Russia’s Hmeimim air base in Syria is currently sheltering approximately 9,000 people fleeing from escalating sectarian violence, according to Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova. Most of the displaced individuals are women and children.
According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, security forces and allied militants have killed more than 1,380 Alawite civilians. Media footages documented scenes of entire families brutally killed.
Zakharova emphasized Russia’s efforts to protect its citizens and military assets in the country, particularly the Hmeimim base and Tartous naval facility, pointing out that Moscow is in active communication with regional powers to stabilize Syria.
