Kashmiri scholar completes translation of Holy Quran into Kashmiri after four decades

After 42 years of dedicated effort, Kashmiri scholar Gulzar Ahmad Paray, 75, has completed the translation of the Holy Quran into the Kashmiri language. His achievement has been widely praised by scholars and religious figures in Kashmir.

Paray, a retired government employee with a master’s degree in Kashmiri, began the project to help native speakers understand the Holy Quran better. Over the years, he published five parts of the translation for educational institutions. Now, with all 30 parts completed, preparations are underway for the full printed edition.

“There were moments when the responsibility felt overwhelming, but the thought of future generations reading and understanding the Quran in their mother tongue kept me going,” Paray said. Religious scholars from described the translation as a “great spiritual service” that will aid many who struggle with Arabic.

Kashmiri, spoken by around seven million people, is the primary language in Kashmir’s Indian and Pakistani regions, with a small number of speakers in Pakistan’s Neelum Valley.
This milestone enhances Quranic understanding in Kashmiri-speaking communities and reflects Paray’s devotion to Islamic scholarship.
