The Nigerian government has released new guidelines to support the implementation of its National Policy on Plastic Waste Management (NPPWM), news outlets reported. These guidelines, developed between March 2023 and November 2024, aim to help state and local governments manage plastic waste more effectively while aligning with global environmental commitments.
The NPPWM, launched in 2021, focuses on reducing plastic waste, cutting greenhouse gas emissions, limiting single-use plastics (SUPs), and promoting recycling. The newly introduced framework outlines key actions under two main areas: ‘Collection, Diversion and Recycling’ and ‘Single-use Plastics.’
Developed through a three-stage review involving government agencies, environmental regulators, and industry stakeholders, the guidelines were finalized after validation workshops in late 2024. They establish baseline standards while allowing local authorities to implement stricter measures based on their capabilities.
