Shia students at Glasgow Caledonian University condemn repeated attacks on their religious symbols

Several Shia students at Glasgow Caledonian University in Glasgow, Scotland, have expressed their deep frustration over the increasing incidents of assault and bullying targeting their beliefs and religious symbols. The students reported that these attacks are deliberately aimed at their religious practices.

They highlighted repeated violations at the university’s prayer hall, where turbas were found broken and discarded in trash bins, a clear sign of disrespect for their religious rituals. The students described these actions as coming from an extremist group that repeatedly carries out such attacks without any deterrence.

The students called on the university administration to take responsibility for protecting religious freedoms and to stop these violations, which undermine the university’s environment of coexistence. They expressed disappointment at the lack of strict measures despite their repeated complaints.

They urged local authorities to intervene urgently and hold those responsible for these attacks accountable, warning that the continuation of such violations could escalate anger and threaten stability within the campus.

British universities are known for their cultural and religious diversity, but the recurrence of such incidents raises questions about the commitment of some institutions to providing a safe and respectful environment for all students.
