Meta to invest $65 billion in AI infrastructure in 2025, CEO announces

Meta Platforms plans to invest up to $65 billion in expanding its artificial intelligence infrastructure in 2025, CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced on Friday. The investment aims to strengthen Meta’s competitive position against rivals like OpenAI and Google.

As part of the initiative, Meta will increase hiring in AI roles and develop a 2-gigawatt data center, which will be large enough to cover a significant portion of Manhattan. The company also plans to acquire over 1.3 million graphics processors, with 1 gigawatt of computing power expected to go online in 2025.

Zuckerberg emphasized that 2025 would be a pivotal year for AI, with the company’s core products and business being driven by AI advancements in the coming years. Meta’s move follows similar efforts by other tech giants, including Microsoft and Amazon, to enhance their AI capabilities.

Meta has gained attention with its open-source approach to AI, offering free access to its Llama AI models. Zuckerberg aims to have Meta’s AI assistant serving over 1 billion people by 2025, up from 600 million in 2024. The $65 billion investment marks a significant increase from the company’s 2024 spending estimate of $38 billion to $40 billion.
