Judge blocks Trump’s order on citizenship for children of undocumented immigrants
A federal judge on Thursday temporarily blocked President Donald Trump’s recent executive order denying U.S. citizenship to children born to undocumented parents, calling it “blatantly unconstitutional,” newspaper agency Associated Press reported.
The 14th Amendment, ratified in 1868, guarantees citizenship to those born on U.S. soil. Trump’s order, issued Monday after his second-term inauguration, aimed to deny citizenship to children born after February 19 if their parents are in the country illegally.
It also barred federal agencies from recognizing or issuing citizenship documents for such children. The order faced swift legal challenges, with 22 states and immigrant rights groups filing lawsuits. A case brought by Washington, Arizona, Oregon, and Illinois was the first to be heard.
In a separate context, President Trump signed an executive order on Thursday mandating the development of artificial intelligence (AI) systems that are “free from ideological bias or engineered social agendas,” according to the Associated Press.
The order also calls for a review of “all policies, directives, regulations, orders, and other actions” implemented under former President Joe Biden’s 2023 AI executive order, which Trump has now revoked.
