Hong Kong boosts Muslim-friendly tourism
The Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) is making significant progress in positioning the city as a Muslim-friendly travel destination by collaborating with CrescentRating (CR), an internationally recognized Halal-travel certification authority, TTG Asia—a leading travel and tourism publisher and events organiser In the Asia-Pacific—reported on Wednesday.
Since May 2024, CR has assessed and certified 50 hotels in Hong Kong for their Muslim travel readiness, a sharp rise from just a few accredited properties previously. Top-rated hotels, such as Grand Hyatt Hong Kong and Marriott Hong Kong Ocean Park, earned five out of seven ratings, with others offering Halal breakfast options at minimum.
For the first time, the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre secured a CR gold rating for its prayer room facilities and Halal catering. Attractions and shopping malls are now seeking similar ratings, reflecting growing interest across the tourism sector.
In collaboration with the Islamic Community Fund of Hong Kong, HKTB also awarded Halal certification to fine-dining Chinese restaurant Chinesology, marking another milestone.
HKTB’s initiatives target key Muslim-majority markets in the Middle East and Southeast Asia, including Indonesia and Malaysia. With increased promotions and capacity-building efforts planned for 2025, Hong Kong aims to solidify its appeal to Muslim travelers.
