At least 40 farmers were killed in an attack by militants linked to the terrorist group Daesh in Borno State, northeastern Nigeria, on Sunday evening.
Osman Tar, Borno’s Commissioner for Information, reported that the attackers gathered dozens of farmers in the Dumba area, near Lake Chad, and opened fire on them.
In a statement, Tar said authorities have instructed military forces to pursue and eliminate the terrorists in and around Dumba and their hideouts in the Lake Chad region.
He noted that the farmers had ventured beyond the security limits set by the military for farming and fishing, leaving them vulnerable to attacks and landmines, particularly at night.
The Lake Chad area is a stronghold for terrorist groups, serving as a base for cross-border attacks on Nigeria, Niger, Cameroon, and Chad. Local media, citing a confidential intelligence report, suggested the death toll might exceed 100.
